Exceptional Success: the Mauricie Campus

Launched in 2003, the Université de Montréal’s Mauricie Campus now boasts almost 200 medical students in the program’s various components. Dr. Pierre Gagné played a pivotal role in the campus’s establishment and success.

This Project Is a Clear Success Story in Several Respects:

  • The first students arrived within 24 months.
  • The first general practitioners earned their diploma in just 36 months and 80% of them established a practice in the region, a source of great pride for the community!
  • Quality instruction: After only two cohorts of graduates, the Campus stands out for medical training excellence and ranks first, ahead of 17 faculties of medicine in Canada, based on results obtained at the Medical Council of Canada examinations.
  • The region no longer has a medical staff shortage.

Dr. Pierre Gagné, founder of the Campus of the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Medicine in Mauricie and its first Assistant Dean, focused on collaboration to bring about various collective successes for this bold roll-out strategy.

At the opening of the Campus facilities in 2009, the Québec Minister of Health and Social Services described the Campus as “Québec’s most beautiful medical campus!”  The following year, its students ranked first at the Medical Council of Canada examinations, ahead of 17 faculties of medicine.

The Campus now has more than 200 students in training.

Investing in Regional Medical Education: a Responsible Government Decision

  • $10 million invested to end severe medical staff shortages that were compromising the population’s health and well-being.
  • The local community rallied to make a $1-million donation to the project.
  • The number of physicians practising in the region now matches the Québec average.
